My goal is always to preserve the voice and intent of the author while ensuring a smooth read for the audience. Grammatical errors and the like are distracting to readers and interrupt the flow of your manuscript. We want them to keep reading − to keep wanting more.
I use a feature called Track Changes in Microsoft Word. This is so you can see all of my changes, along with any comments about the changes, and you can accept or reject them.
To figure the charges for editing your manuscript simply divide the word count on your document by 250 (the standard words-per-page count); this will be your page numbers. Then multiply that number times the cost of the level of service requested. Round up partial pages to one page. I will double check your page numbers before billing.
Proofreading $4 Per Page (250 Words Per Page)
Proofreading is basic spelling, punctuation, and typographical errors. It also includes word-usage issues a spell checker would not pick up, such as to, two, and too.
Copyediting $6 Per Page (250 Words Per Page)
This is the most requested level of service. Copyediting includes such things as: grammar, verb tense, sentence structure, wordiness, subject-verb agreement, consistency, and style adherence. This is not rewriting; it is your words perfected. Along with your edited manuscript you will get an editorial letter from me. This letter focuses on the strengths of manuscript as well as any areas for growth.
Substantive Editing $8 Per Page (250 Words Per Page)
This level of editing is much more in-depth, and addresses: development, structure, clarity, flow, contradictions, organization, and transitions. This level includes proofreading and copyediting. Along with your edited manuscript you will get an editorial letter from me. This editorial letter focuses on the strengths of manuscript as well as any areas for growth. In the editorial letter with this level of editing you will also get general writing advice specific to your needs.
Rewriting $20 Per Page (250 Words Per Page)
This is a major overhaul. It involves the editor taking what you have and restructuring, rewording, and paraphrasing it. The preservation of the writer’s voice is more difficult, depending on the material, but those seeking this service are not usually looking for that. If writing is not your thing but you have the material written down this may be for you. This service is not available for student papers or sermons.
